Educational Leadership

Educational Leadership programs prepare educators to become more effective leaders and administrators. This comprehensive program provides in-depth opportunities for professional growth and specialization for teacher leaders, school counselors, and administrators who have completed a master’s degree from an accredited college or university. The program is individualized depending on the participant’s area of interest.

Certificate of Education Specialist | EdS

The Certificate of Education Specialist (EdS) in educational leadership provides in-depth opportunities for professional growth and specialization for teacher leaders, school counselors, and administrators who have completed a master’s degree from an accredited college or university. The program is individualized depending on the participant’s area of interest. Participants must complete a minimum of 63 hours of credit at the graduate level. Participants are assigned a program chair who will work with the student to develop a course of study beyond the required classes. Some courses may be transferred to a PhD degree.

The degree is a non-thesis degree requiring a minimum of 63 credit hours at the graduate level.

  • a bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S. institution or the equivalent from a foreign institution
  • a master's degree from an accredited U.S. institution or the equivalent from a foreign institution
  • GRE combined verbal and quantitative score of 297 (verbal: 153; quantitative: 144) is recommended
  • grade point average of at least 3.00 ("A"= 4.0) on all undergraduate work (or last half-degree requirement) and a 3.00 GPA or better on any graduate work already completed. International applicants must have at least a 3.00 GPA, or equivalent, on all college-level work attempted.
  • Nomination letter from a current or past school administrator with which the candidate has worked. The nomination letter must be on letterhead or from a professional email address, attesting to:
    • your successful leadership ability and accomplishments
    • your ability to complete advance academic work
  • Recommendations: Two (2) additional letters of recommendation, on letterhead or from a professional email address, attesting to:
    • your successful leadership ability and accomplishments
    • your ability to complete advance academic work
  • Interviews: Interviews are conducted by two program faculty. Alternate video arrangements for interviews will be made for applicants not located in south Louisiana.

Master of Education (MEd)

The Master of Education (MEd) in Educational Leadership is designed for accomplished and caring teachers ready to take their skills to the next level. This online degree helps prepare educators to become more effective leaders and administrators. This comprehensive program allows educators to attain more challenging and in-demand education jobs and to build learning communities that are welcoming, challenging, and rewarding for children and teachers alike.

The program can be completed in as little as 15 months and works in conjunction with teachers’ and educators’ personal and professional schedules. LSU’s coursework covers all areas of the educational spectrum, with classes in topics such as ethics and educational leadership, administration of school personnel, and applying research in education.

The degree requires 39 credit hours at the graduate level. This program is offered through LSU Online.

  • At least 36 hours at the 7000 level or above.
  • A primary area of 39 hours of earned credit in the core area.
  • Six hours of supervised internship.

The student must pass a comprehensive final exam consisting of a series of written questions pertaining to the student’s specialization.
